Brides always ask me how to choose a theme for their wedding. My answer is always the
same. Think elegance and good taste. You can't go wrong with that for a wedding theme.
Elegant doesn't have to mean fancy. It means attending to the small details that pull the party
together. After all, the reception is nothing more than a huge party celebration of the marriage.
Choose a wedding theme that is do able. Don't attempt to do a wedding theme that is going to
cause more stress, or is nearly impossible to execute easily. Don't over think your theme or get
too complicated. Keep is simple. Too many details and too much clutter will look cheesy to
your guests and messy in your photographs. Don't choose a theme that will offend your guests.
When trying to determine your wedding theme, there are things to keep in mind:
Close your eyes and picture your wedding. What do you see? A traditional church wedding? A
seaside beach wedding? A garden wedding? Lots of flowers? Use this as your first clue.
- For a seaside beach wedding, you can use a beach theme. You can use seashells in
your centerpieces or bouquets, a sea inspired wedding cake, soft blues as accent
colors.
- A garden wedding dictates a garden setting and flowers for both the wedding and
reception. You can rent greenery and light them up with twinkling Christmas lights and
accent with blooming potted plants in season.
- A wedding featuring flowers can be based on your favorite flower or colors of flower.
Toss around ideas by thinking outside the box.
Decide with your fiancé on a theme using your mutual interests. I went to a lavish country club
wedding where the ice sculpture was a Harley Davidson. Make sure if you are doing an off the
wall theme, that everyone is in agreement.
Choose a theme based on your favorite color and let the color be your guide as to where the
theme will take you. Here's a great example of a Tiffany blue wedding theme Tiffany Blue
Wedding Ideas.
Here are some basic starting points to choosing your theme:
Romantic theme, it can be hearts, flowers or soft romantic pale colors with soft twinkling lights.
Heritage theme, base it on family traditions or a blend of both families traditions to make the
wedding truly memorable for all of your guests.
Seasons of the year theme, based on the season of the year. A winter wedding can be white
and sparkling, with tiny lights and sparkling crystals. Spray paint twigs white and dip them in
silver glitter. Arrange in a vase and you can hang crystals from clear fishing line to add detail to
the arrangement. A spring wedding can be full of in season spring flowers and accented with
spring colors. A summer wedding can have sparklers or an outdoor fireworks display.
Incorporate lots of fresh fruits and flowers into the celebration, even consider a picnic theme. A
fall wedding can be based on fall colors and the changing leaves on the trees. Great for
outdoor pictures!
Fairy Tale Wedding, every bride is a princess! A castle wedding cake and invitations, glass
slippers for favors! This is a fun theme, the bride should wear a ball gown and a tiara, because
every princess has a tiara! You can even have a spun glass coach for your cake topper.
A period wedding, a place in time. From the Victorian era, the roaring 20's to the big bands of
the 1940's, you can choose a time as your theme that interests both of you. You can rent vintage
cars instead of a limo, dress according to the fashions of that era. Looking for ideas? Ask
Grandma!
A holiday Wedding, a wedding held on or near a holiday. If you choose a wedding in
December, your theme is pretty well set. Most halls and churches are already decorated in
Christmas regalia, so there is little decorating costs. A new years eve wedding is becoming
popular. Everyone is ready to dress up and party on New Years Eve!
A mutual hobby of the bride and groom. If they share a hobby and are passionate about it,
whether it be music or mountain biking, use it as a clue for a starting point.
Sports, some couples are rabid sports fans and their team spirit is boundless. Incorporating
aspects of the team into the theme. If you are a baseball fanatic, you can
dance to CCR's 'Put me in Coach' for a great way to get the party rocking. You can hand out
peanuts for favors by dressing up the person handing out the favors as a peanut vendor! Just be
careful not to overdo the sports theme, you can put off the grandparents!
Destination Wedding , if the bride and groom had a destination wedding, the reception can
reflect the destination area theme. If your destination is the beach, the theme is a no brainer.
If you are getting married in Las Vegas, think glitz,
sparkles, ostrich feathers, lights!
Your wedding theme will dictate where you go with colors, decorations, invitations, dresses and
the reception. Start planning your wedding theme today and your wedding theme will make
your wedding planning easier and less stressful!
The Worst Wedding Themes Ever!
I've dealt with these brides personally. The theme was predetermined before I met the bride
and there was no changing her mind. These are my favorite worst wedding themes ever!
The Bear Wedding. My number one worst theme ever! The bride was a sweetheart, but she
loved and collected teddy bears so she and her mother decided on a teddy bear theme. All the
tables at the reception were graced with a bear from her personal collection. The bridesmaids
carried bears instead of a bridal bouquet. They had an elastic strap sewn onto the back side of
the bear so they could carry the bear down the aisle in a uniform fashion. The bear had flowers
around its neck, but the bear was like a headlight as they came down the aisle.
The grandmothers corsages were wrist corsages with a 3" miniature bear in the middle. True!
And now for the bear bride....you just had to see it to believe it! She and her mother sewed 5
miniature bears upright on a crown base and attached a veil to the crown. There were 5
miniature bears, about 3 to 4" tall sticking out of her head. When she came in to try it on with her
gorgeous wedding dress, we were literally speechless. It was one of those moments where
you had to suppress your laughter because we were stunned. She carried a basket full of
bears. I would have loved to see the faces of the guests as she walked down the aisle. And I
would have loved to hear what the groom's mother had to say about her get up.
The 4th Of July Wedding. My number two all time worst wedding theme. This bride wanted an
all American theme so she set her wedding date to July 4th. Her maids were all done in a
rainbow of red, royal blue and white satin dresses. They carried FLAGS like the flag bearers
you see at the Olympics, the flag extended in front of them. The maid of honor wore a Statue of
Liberty crown, it was the foam version you buy at souvenir shops. They spray painted it red,
white and blue and glued on big sparkly rhinestones and she carried a torch. She went down
the aisle with the foam crown and her arm up like the statue of liberty with her shawl draped
around her shoulders like the Statue of Liberty. Yikes! Now, that's a true friend. I wonder if she
ever forgave the bride? ;)
The 70's disco theme wedding. This bride had to be a major John Travolta fan, because she
dressed her groomsmen in Travolta's 'Saturday Night Fever' white polyester suits that she found
at a flea market. The bridesmaids wore a mismatched group of tinselly 70's disco dresses
from thrift stores Think prom dresses gone really, really bad. Ironically, the bride wore a
beautiful traditional wedding dress. The reception featured the traditional disco ball and the DJ
dressed in a blue polyester suit. The first dance, of course, was to "You Should Be Dancing" by
the Bee Gees. Now, while this can be a fun theme for a party, the wedding itself looked like a
thrift shop blew up because it was so mismatched.
The High School Theme: This is on my worst wedding theme list because of the wedding cake.
This was a strange theme considering the bride and groom hadn't seen high school for 7 or 8
years. They decided since they were die hard football fans and their alma mater was the high
school state champs, they'd use the high school football theme for their wedding. The school
colors were red and black. They decorated the hall with school pendants, pom poms and red
and black crepe paper. It reminded me of a high school gym. The cake was BLACK with small
footballs in lieu of flowers. The cake topper was a miniature football trophy. It was hideous. The
maids carried silk roses in black with red streamers and mini footballs wired into the bouquet.
I was a guest at this wedding and when the brides mother asked me what I thought I was able
to answer honestly: " I've never seen anything like this."
Camouflage Wedding Theme: This COULD by my favorite worst wedding theme, but I'm torn
between this and the bear wedding. Favored by some people, this wedding took it to the
extreme. She and the groom are avid hunters. The bride wanted to wear camouflage hunting
boots under her wedding dress, but her mother objected and she finally gave in. The
groomsmen are all wearing camouflage vests. The wedding table is draped with camouflage
fabric, the floral arrangements have bullets in them and the table is draped with bullet shell
casings that are hung in a lit garland. The favors are empty shell bullet casings stuffed with
mints. TRUE!! Every table has bullets in the flower arrangements. The bride assured me that
the bullets were empty when they bought them. I will post pictures of this wedding as soon as I
receive them!
The Hot List Wedding Themes
Use good taste when picking out a wedding theme. Don't choose a theme that will put off some of your guests.
Elegance and good taste never go out of style, that's a great starting point to choosing a theme.
Remember the wedding pictures are forever, so choose a theme that will withstand the test of time.
The wedding theme will guide you in a lot of your choices like invitations and favors.
Think simplicity when choosing your wedding theme. Going too deep into your theme is going to take away from the seriousness of the wedding.

Wedding Themes That Went Awry
The Butterfly Theme. This theme is a great theme if done properly, but the bride went to
butterflies everywhere from the floral arrangements, bouquets and head table.
She had planned a butterfly release after the ceremony instead of bubbles. It WOULD have
worked had anyone bothered to read the directions on the butterflies. Instead, they stored the
butterflies in a hot car trunk. You know what's coming...the butterflies were all dead from the
heat. It was gruesome! After the dead butterflies, it cast a creepy pallor on the reception with
all the butterflies. Moral of the story: If you plan something like a butterfly release, read and
follow the directions so this doesn't happen to you!
Prince Charming: The Knight In Shining Armor . The happy couple decided on an outdoor
wedding in a meadow. The groom wanted to surprise the bride by arriving on horseback. The
problem is that the groom didn't know how to ride a horse and took riding lessons. The stable
sent the wrong horse the day of the wedding, a much more spirited horse than the docile horse
he trained to ride. You guessed it! The horse took off running when it spotted the crowd and
the groom couldn't control the horse. It took awhile for the groom to dismount and for the guests
to stop laughing!
