How to Choose an Amazing Wedding Photographer
Your wedding photos are a once in a lifetime moment in time to capture your wedding day.
the best, yet you need to stay in a budget. You want a professional, not your uncle and his
camera. So how do you choose?
Attend bridal shows and use word of mouth from your friends for recommendations.
Bridal shows will showcase the photographer’s talents and you can instantly compare
them to other photographers works at the show. Some pictures speak to you. Some
won’t. Most wedding photographers shoot photos in their style and you should select a
photographer’s style that matches your style and your thoughts.
Know what style you want before you search out photographers. Do you want artistic photos?
A photo journal of the day? Modern or traditional photos? Have some idea by looking at web
sites on the Internet.
Make appointments with photographers to see their portfolio. You can check out most
photographers on the web. You are interviewing them as they are interviewing you.
Most photographers offer packages with a la carte items. All photographers price
differently. Know what you are getting in the package and the extra costs involved. Ask for
a price list and ask them to give you a quote based on what you want for the wedding.
Your wedding day requires a photographer's attention to detail and their artistic eye.
Photographers are artists. You need to get to know your photographer. Is your photographer
willing to share their experiences? Does your photographer seem really interested in your
wedding? Are they asking you questions about location, outdoor shots, colors, etc? If you
don't feel comfortable with your photographer, and you aren’t on the same page, you may
need to continue interviewing. Will your photographer bring an extra camera in case the first
camera malfunctions? Do they have an assistant taking candids? Will they give you a list of
pictures opportunities so you can choose the shots you absolutely don’t want to miss? Do
they want a family member appointed to help them identify the family members so they don’t
have to constantly bother the bride?
You want your photographer to be part of the festivities, not controlling the festivities. No one
wants to spend the first hours of their reception posing for pictures. Ask if you can do the
formal portraits before the ceremony so you can enjoy the reception.
Verify your photographers credentials by calling the Better Business Bureau, looking at their
portfolios and asking for references from brides that were just recently married. Word of
mouth is powerful in helping you to choose your photographer. Recently married brides will
honestly tell you if they were satisfied with the photographer’s work and how well they
handled the wedding.
Good photographers book well in advance. Be prepared to put down your deposit when you
find your match. If they are booked on your date, ask them for recommendations. You will be
expected to sign a contract with the photographer that spells their services, payment terms
and delivery times. Read the contract BEFORE you sign it.
Questions you need to ask when interviewing a wedding
photographer:
How long have you been a wedding photographer?
What is included in your packages?
What costs are extra?
How long do I have your services at the wedding?
Will you personally be taking the photos or will it be one of your assistants?
How long after the wedding will the proofs be delivered?
Will the proofs be digital or printed?
How long will you keep the negatives?
Do you put the pictures on a digital disc?
Do you sign over copyrights so I can reprint my own?
Can I buy the proofs?
Will you be giving me a list of photo opportunities so I can make sure that I get shots I don't
want to miss?
Will you bring a back up camera?
Will you be unobtrusive at the reception and take candids in addition to posed shots?
Can you give me references?
Will you meet with me in advance at the location to get an idea of the wedding site and
reception? Can we discuss the shots I want taken?
What do we do about outdoor shots if it rains?
What is your payment schedule?
What happens if my wedding is canceled or postponed?
Can I add pictures to my album at a later time?

Some photographers will hang from trees to get the shots you want, others are more traditional. Make sure you are on the same page to get pictures that meet your expectations.
