The wedding cake is the centerpiece of your reception and its traditional meaning is
good luck to the couple.

Your guests usually gravitate to the cake table to get a good look at your wedding cake.
The tradition of the wedding cake dates back to the medieval times when each wedding
guest would bring a cake to the wedding celebration.  They would stack the cakes in a
high pile.  If the bride and groom could kiss over the stacked cakes, it was considered
good luck for the couple.  The stacks of cakes eventually morphed into the traditional
wedding cake.

During the Roman times, the wedding cake was actually unsweetened bread. The
bride and the groom first tasted the cake.  The bread  was broken over the head of the
bride by the groom to symbolize  happiness, prosperity and fertility for the couple.
Guests vied for the crumbs as the crumbs were thought  to be tokens of good luck for
them, also. The tasting of the bread before it was crumbled over the bride's head lead
to the tradition of the bride and groom feeding each other a bite of wedding cake.

Wedding cakes are traditionally accented with bows, flowers, lace, doves, swags and
horseshoes , incorporating again the good luck tradition for the couple. Today's couple
puts their own stamp on their wedding cake by using unusual designs, colors, sizes
and shapes.  Each wedding cake is unique as is the couple getting married!
Couples are also choosing different flavored layers, fillings, icings and even
cheesecakes.  The cake must not only be visually a work of art, but taste good, too!

Wedding cakes were traditionally white and this white cake dated back to the Victorian
times.  The symbolism denoted purity.  Since the wedding cake was known as the
bride's cake, it was necessary she show her purity. The cake showed that the bride was
the center of the wedding celebration.   Some thought that the white cake linked the
bride to the cake and reminded the guests of the bride's white dress.
